More than a quarter of the accidents reported each year to the enforcing authorities are associated with manual handling. Although few of these are fatal, a signi cant proportion of such workplace injuries involve long-term health problems; many result in permanent impairment or disability. These injuries can lead to substantial compensations claims, increased insurance premiums and the loss of essential labour for a signi cant period.
